Wine Advocate 89 points - The most rustic of these three wines, with lots of pepper, roasted herbs, meat juices, charcoal, and scorched earth, this spicy wine has an inky ruby/purple color and lots of body. It comes across like a rustic Zinfandel, but with loads of character and personality, displaying an almost savage intensity to its flavors. This is a wild, adventuresome wine that should drink nicely for several years. Bring on the pizza! ” (Jan 2010)

Wine maker notes
The fruit comes from head-trained old vines and is harvested in early September. This is truly remarkable plant material in very old vineyards; some dating to Roman times. The soils in Manduria are red iron-rich clays with large calcareous rocks, shells and coral from ancient sea beds. We’re talking ancient, gnarled baskets hugging the ground and rocks around them, ancient chariots buried underneath, lost civilization stuff.

Primitivo, aka Zinfandel: DNA analysis shows Primitivo is genetically identical to Zinfandel. Carole Meredith of UC Davis, the most important genetic academic in the world of wine, has confirmed Primitivo & Zinfandel have identical DNA. Primitivo and Zinfandel, however, have not been officially defined as synonymous by the TTB. We presented Dr. Meredith’s findings with the Layer Cake Primitivo label and received the first-ever Certificate of Label Approval with Primitivo and Zinfandel used as synonyms on the label, yet the TTB has still not posted them as interchangeable in the regulations.

Layer Cake Wines are about affordable luxury. We set out to make wines that over-deliver. We fly around the world, selecting vineyard sites and hand-making wines to be sure they are true to the grape variety and the region, but never lose that stylistic thread through them that tells you, yes, this is a Layer Cake Wine. Layer Cake Wines are made on four continents and in five countries. Just when other California winemakers are settling into a nice Hawaiian vacation, we are boarding planes bound for Australia and then Argentina for harvest in the Southern Hemisphere. At the end of summer, we hustle to Italy and then Spain for the harvests there, before returning to California to make the wines here at home. Without question, our team is the hardest-working bunch in the wine business. All of this hard work is a direct result of the constant positive feedback from you, our loyal fans. We continue to strive for better and better wines every year.
